Is it worth going to Tijuana for dental implants

State-of-the-Art Surgical Dental Suite

Yes, going to Tijuana for dental implants can be worth it, especially if you need multiple implants or full-arch treatment. The potential savings can reach thousands of dollars even after travel expenses. But price alone should never determine where you have implant surgery. The surgeon, implant system, diagnostic process, final restoration, and follow-up care matter just as much.

I have worked with patients traveling from the United States and Canada for dental treatment for years, and most aren’t simply looking for the cheapest implant they can find.

Usually, they already have an estimate from home and are trying to answer a more practical question:

Will I save enough money to make traveling to Tijuana worthwhile without compromising the quality of my treatment?

That’s the question I would ask too.

Why Do Americans Travel to Mexico for Dental Implants?

Dental tourism is more common than many patients realize.

A U.S. population-based study published through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that among Americans traveling internationally for medical care, Mexico was the most common destination, representing 41% of trips, while dental care accounted for 55% of treatments received abroad.

Cost is one obvious reason.

The American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute reported approximately $189 billion in U.S. dental expenditures in 2024. The ADA also reports that 21% of working-age adults, ages 19 to 64, had no dental benefits.

When someone needs one implant, cost matters.

When someone needs four implants, multiple restorations, or an entire arch of teeth, it can completely change what treatment is financially possible.

How Much Can You Save on Dental Implants in Tijuana?

he first rule is to compare equivalent treatments.

A dental implant restoration generally involves:

Implant + abutment + crown

A low advertised “implant price” may not include all three.

Here is a more useful comparison using currently published U.S. pricing and Smile 4 Ever Mexico’s current pricing:

Treatment Published U.S. Cost* Smile 4 Ever Mexico
Implant + abutment + crown $5,000–$7,500 $1,899
Fixed full-arch implants $14,000–$36,000 per arch From $7,998 per arch
All-on-4 immediate-load PMMA Varies From $7,998 per arch
All-on-4 hybrid PMMA Varies $8,500 per arch

*The U.S. figures above use published ClearChoice 2025/2026 pricing as a reference point. ClearChoice reports $5,000–$7,500 for a single-tooth implant including the implant, abutment, and crown, and $14,000–$36,000 per arch for fixed full-arch implant treatment. These figures should not be interpreted as universal U.S. prices. Actual costs vary considerably by provider, location, materials, and clinical needs. The comparison is more dramatic when several teeth need replacement. For example, based on those published figures, a patient comparing a $5,000–$7,500 completed single implant in the U.S. with our $1,899 implant, abutment, and zirconia crown package is looking at a difference of approximately $3,100 to $5,600 for one tooth

When Does Traveling to Tijuana Make the Most Sense?

For one implant, you should do the math.

Someone living in Southern California may have a very different calculation than someone flying from New York.

For multiple implants, the financial argument generally becomes stronger because airfare and hotel costs don’t multiply with each implant.

And for All-on-4 or full-arch treatment, the difference can become substantial.

Published U.S. fixed full-arch treatment can reach tens of thousands of dollars per arch. At that level, airfare and several hotel nights may represent a relatively small portion of the potential savings.

This is where Tijuana also has a logistical advantage over many international dental destinations.

Patients can fly domestically into San Diego International Airport, and Tijuana is directly across the U.S.-Mexico border.

At Smile 4 Ever Mexico, transportation from San Diego International Airport is included for qualifying treatment plans of $5,000 or more, and border pickup is available during business hours.

How Many Trips Will I Need?

Many traditional implant cases involve two phases:

Trip 1: Implant placement and any necessary surgical treatment.

Healing period: The implant integrates with the bone.

Trip 2: Final restoration.

Full-arch treatment can be different. Some patients may qualify for immediate loading, allowing fixed temporary or provisional teeth to be placed shortly after surgery.

But not everyone qualifies.

Bone quality, implant stability, anatomy, and the overall treatment plan matter.

I would be cautious of anyone promising exactly the same timeline to every patient before proper diagnostics.

Your travel schedule shouldn’t determine your biology.

Is It Safe to Get Dental Implants in Tijuana?

Dental implant treatment can be performed safely in Tijuana, but choosing Tijuana itself doesn’t guarantee safe treatment.

Choose the provider carefully.

Look at professional credentials, surgical experience, diagnostic imaging, implant systems, sterilization, written treatment plans, follow-up protocols, and warranty terms.

The CDC study mentioned earlier also provides useful perspective. Although many Americans traveled abroad successfully for care, 5% of respondents reported a complication associated with their medical tourism experience.

That is exactly why I wouldn’t choose a clinic based solely on the lowest quote.

The Cheapest Implant Can Become an Expensive Implant

There is another issue patients rarely think about before surgery.

What happens five or ten years from now if the implant needs a component replaced?

We have seen patients arrive with existing implants where identifying the manufacturer or obtaining compatible components becomes part of the problem.

That’s why I recommend asking about the implant system before surgery, not after.

You’re not buying something you plan to replace next year.

Ideally, that implant will remain part of your mouth for many years.

When Might Tijuana Not Be Worth It?

If you need only a minor procedure and airfare, hotel, and time away from work eliminate most of the savings, local treatment may simply be more convenient.

Certain medical situations may also make having treatment close to your physicians more practical.

And I would never recommend choosing Tijuana solely because one clinic gave you the lowest number.

With implant dentistry, you’re choosing more than an implant.

You’re choosing:

a surgical team + implant system + restorative plan + laboratory + follow-up care.

Compare the complete package.

So, Is It Worth Going to Tijuana for Dental Implants?

For many patients, yes, particularly for multiple implants and full-arch treatment.

The potential difference can be large enough that even after airfare, accommodations and a second visit, the overall treatment may still cost substantially less than comparable U.S. options.

But I wouldn’t recommend Tijuana simply because it’s cheaper.

Before deciding, ask both your U.S. dentist and the clinic in Tijuana the same questions:

  • Who is performing my surgery?
  • Which implant system will you use?
  • What exactly is included?
  • How many visits will I need?
  • What will my final teeth be made from?
  • What happens if something goes wrong?
  • What does the warranty cover?
  • And most importantly:
  • Why are you recommending this treatment for me?

If you receive good answers to those questions and the financial difference remains substantial, then traveling to Tijuana for dental implants can make very good sense.
