What it is

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, also called a cap, is a custom cover that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth. In other words, it rebuilds the tooth’s shape and strength when a filling isn’t enough. A crown can also be the visible tooth on top of a dental implant.

You may need a crown for:

  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • A tooth with a very large filling
  • A tooth that’s had a root canal
  • Worn-down teeth from grinding
  • An old crown that no longer fits or looks right
  • The visible tooth on top of a dental implant

Sometimes you don’t need a crown

If a filling or an inlay can fix the tooth, we’ll tell you. Inlays and onlays are $400 per tooth and keep more of your natural tooth. Because a crown requires shaping the tooth, we only recommend one when it’s truly the best option.

Making them last

Caring for Your Dental Crowns

Crowns don’t get cavities, but the tooth underneath still can. So a few daily habits make a big difference.

  • Brush twice a day and floss around the crown
  • Avoid chewing ice, pens or very hard candy
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
  • Keep up with checkups and cleanings

Crowns at our Tijuana clinic are $499 (E.max) or $550 (zirconia) per tooth. Also, your in-clinic consultation is $40 and X-rays are free if you need them.

Yes. “Cap” is simply another name for a dental crown: a custom cover that protects the whole visible part of a tooth.

Neither is best for every tooth. Zirconia is usually chosen for back teeth, strong bites and for dental implants restoration, while E.max is often preferred for front teeth because it looks especially natural. Your dentist recommends one based on the tooth and your bite.

Often, yes. A tooth with a root canal becomes more fragile, so we usually protect it with a post and a crown. See our root canal page.

The tooth is numbed during treatment, so you shouldn’t feel pain. Afterward, some temporary sensitivity is normal and usually fades within a few days.

It depends on how much of the tooth is damaged. An inlay or onlay ($400) repairs part of the tooth and keeps more of your natural structure. A crown, on the other hand, covers the whole tooth when the damage is bigger. Your dentist recommends the most conservative option that will last.

A crown covers the whole visible tooth and adds strength, so it’s used for damaged teeth. A veneer, on the other hand, covers only the front surface and is mainly cosmetic.

With good care, crowns can last many years. However, their lifespan depends on the material, your bite, grinding, hygiene and regular checkups.
