What Will Dentistry Look Like in the Future, and How Much of It Is Already Here? Twenty years from now, will we still drill teeth, place dental implants and make crowns? Will dentures disappear? Will artificial intelligence design our smiles? Could we eventually grow a replacement tooth instead of replacing it with an implant? Is all that even safe? Those questions sound futuristic, but dentistry is in an unusual position. Some of the technology that sounds like it belongs in 2045 is already being used today. Other ideas that receive considerable attention are nowhere near ready for routine patient care. A recent Vogue article looked at what our teeth might look like in 2045. It predicts a move toward more natural cosmetic dentistry, thinner veneers, regenerative treatments, greater attention to prevention and a closer relationship between dental health and overall health. It also raises an interesting cultural point. The future smile may actually look less artificial than the smile many people have been trying to achieve for the last decade. That may turn out to be one of the biggest changes of all. The perfect smile may stop looking so perfect For years, cosmetic dentistry was easy to recognize. Extremely white teeth, very uniform shapes and almost perfect symmetry became associated with an expensive smile. That preference is beginning to change. Many fashion experts are increasingly showing interest in dental work that is difficult to detect. Rather than making every tooth identical, cosmetic dentists are increasingly trying to preserve the characteristics that make a smile look believable. This trend is reflected in the growing popularity of thinner veneers and techniques intended to preserve more natural tooth structure while producing less obvious cosmetic work. In the future a great smile may not be the one that looks the most perfect. It may be the one where nobody realizes the person had dental work at all and this matters beyond veneers. The same idea applies to crowns, full mouth reconstruction and implant restorations. Digital design gives dentists and technicians far more control over tooth shape, proportions, bite and the relationship between the teeth and face. The computer can create symmetry. The harder part is knowing when not to. Will artificial intelligence eventually design your teeth? Probably, but that statement needs some context. Artificial intelligence is already being investigated across dentistry for interpreting images, identifying anatomical structures, planning implants, evaluating bone and assisting with diagnosis. A recent systematic review identified 120 studies involving AI in implant dentistry alone. The researchers also cautioned that the field remains relatively underdeveloped and that some studies carry significant risk of bias. So AI in dentistry is real. The idea that it has already replaced the judgment of an experienced dentist is not. The more realistic future is a dentist working with increasingly powerful software. A future system could combine a CT scan, digital impressions, photographs, bite information, bone quality and years of clinical data. It could then help predict where an implant should go, how forces will travel through the final teeth and where problems might develop years later. Research is already discussing the eventual creation of a dental “digital twin,” a detailed virtual representation of an individual patient that could be updated over time. That would change dentistry from reacting to problems toward predicting them. Are dental implants going to become obsolete? Not anytime soon. Dental implants are sometimes discussed as if they are an intermediate technology that will disappear as soon as scientists learn how to grow teeth. Researchers are genuinely working on regeneration of dental tissues and eventually whole teeth. Stem cells, biomaterials and tissue engineering are important areas of research. But there is an important distinction between promising research and a treatment you can make an appointment for. A 2025 review of regenerative dentistry describes complete regeneration of teeth and their supporting tissues as an objective that has not yet been achieved clinically. That makes the next twenty years particularly interesting. Dental implants will probably become more sophisticated before anything replaces them. Planning may become more predictive. Implant surfaces and materials may improve. Surgery may become increasingly guided or assisted by navigation and robotics. Monitoring could also become smarter, allowing dentists to identify problems around implants earlier. In other words, the implant itself may eventually be only one part of a much larger digital system. Is dental technology actually better now, or does it simply look more impressive? This is worth asking because dentistry has become filled with scanners, screens and impressive looking equipment. Technology is useful when it improves a clinical decision or makes a procedure more predictable. Owning a machine does not automatically accomplish either. Consider dental implant surgery. Traditionally, implants could be planned from conventional X rays and placed freehand. Modern digital implant dentistry can combine three dimensional CBCT imaging with an intraoral scan. The dentist can virtually plan the implant before surgery and then transfer that plan to the mouth using computer guided surgery. Current research supports improved precision from these digital workflows compared with conventional freehand approaches. Digital impressions and CAD/CAM manufacturing have also changed how implant restorations are designed and produced. That is a meaningful improvement. But guided surgery does not make an inexperienced dentist experienced. A scanner cannot decide whether a questionable tooth should be saved. AI cannot take responsibility for a treatment plan. Better technology raises what is possible. It does not remove the importance of the person using it. Does Mexico have access to this technology, or is it still catching up? This is an important question for anyone considering dental work in Mexico, particularly patients traveling from the United States or Canada. There is no single technological standard that describes every dental clinic in Mexico, just as there is no single standard that describes every clinic in the United States.
